Shark Heart: A Love Story

When thinking about what wine would pair well with Shark Heart by Emily Habeck my immediate thought was easy, peasy! A label with a Shark on it of course! But as this is a much deeper, even philosophical book I began a deeper consideration. 

  • Something unique and evocative: given the novel’s magical realism and fantastical storyline, something that shares a bit of whimsy seems appropriate.
  • Perhaps my favorite consideration, a wine that conveys a metamorphosis or transition, as almost all of the characters are both physically and mentally changing. 
  • Something with a connection to the sea. This was along the lines of my first thought, a bit more on the nose but when I think about this I think about a crisp (pairs with salty), but comforting white. The beach in question is not a sunny, happy beach, rather, a contemplative and chilly scene. Definitely a Central or Northern California beach. 

Naturally, California is home to plenty of wineries. Wren specifically drops Lewis off in Morro Bay, leaving us endless opportunities to find wines in that general location.
